Tackling food waste

We’ve partnered with Rugby World Champion, Portia Woodman-Wickliffe, and HelloFresh to raise awareness of household food waste in NZ.

Tackling food waste with portia

Every year, Kiwi households are responsible for at least 115 kilograms of good food going to waste*. Not only does this cost up to $1,520 per household each year, meaning nationally we are throwing $3.1 billion worth of food in the bin, it is a huge environmental concern and a major source of avoidable greenhouse gas emissions.

“Seeing and experiencing the weight of my own food waste has made me realise we all have a part to play. I am urging Kiwis to join me in tackling their food waste at home. Wasting food is mostly avoidable with a few simple changes that can have a big impact. From storing our food more sustainability, meal planning, cooking the right portions and making sure we eat leftovers are easy ways we can fight food waste at home.”

HelloFresh customers produce on average 21% less food waste by weight than when cooking with store-bought ingredients, while cooking with HelloFresh generates 72% fewer food scraps compared to cooking a conventional dinner.

“As an organisation, HelloFresh is committed to putting a halt to food waste – from the supply chain to the kitchen. By directly sourcing and delivering the exact amount of ingredients needed, not only does the food arrive faster and fresher, but all the ingredients Kiwis order in their box, end up on the plate.

“To further help us reduce food waste, we’re proud to partner with incredible organisations like KiwiHarvest, whose leading food rescue and sustainability commitments help us take action against food waste together.

“Having the incredible Portia Woodman-Wickliffe join HelloFresh has been integral in helping us demonstrate how more Kiwis can make sustainable food choices in New Zealand.”
