Why it matters
More Kiwi families are struggling with the cost of living. The Ministry of Health reports 1 in 5 kiwi children live in households were food runs out sometimes, or often.
At the same time tonnes of good food is going to waste. 30% of food produced worldwide is lost or wasted.
The Ministry for the Environment completed a major research project at the end of 2025 to establish the amount of food lost or wasted in Aotearoa. There is enough good food going to waste in New Zealand to feed Wellington and Lower Hutt for a year.
This is a problem we have the tools to fix - together.

What does Kiwiharvest do:
KiwiHarvest rescues perfectly good surplus food and redistributes it to more than 235 charities supporting Kiwis in need across the country. Each month, the organisation rescues and redistributes around 300,000 kilograms of food that would otherwise go to waste.
The problems we address:
New Zealand produces enough food to feed 40 million, but in the process of doing this, the NZ food industry sends approximately 240,000 tonnes of good food to waste, every year (this excludes household food waste). Despite producing this amount of food, 1 in 5 households are struggling with food insecurity, a number that is growing in the current economic environment. KiwiHarvest is well positioned to help close this gap, but future growth depends on securing consistent, scalable funding.
